  • Catalogue Essay

The new millennium witnessed an interesting boom in the world of independent watchmaking. Introduced in 2001, the Opus series was the result of a collaborative effort between the house of Harry Winston and creative independent watchmakers. Headed by Maximillian Busser (CEO of Harry Winston Watches before founding MB&F), the series witnessed a wide array of exceptionally innovated timepieces.

The Opus V was launched in 2005 in collaboration with Felix Baumgartner (co-founder and master watchmaker of Urwerk) and was one of the most sought after examples from the Opus series. With a bold, iconic and distinct appeal, the Opus V is a world premier featuring three dimensional satellite hour display via three rotating cubes with retrograde minute scale, day and night indication as well as a 5-Day power reserve indicator can be seen on the dial. Flipping the watch to its back, the wearer is able to see a 5-Year service indicator as a kind reminder to the wearer to service the watch once it has reached the fifth year.

Introduced as limited editions encased in pink gold and platinum with 45 examples made for each, 7 examples were encased in brilliant-cut diamond-set cases and 3 rare examples with baguette-cut diamond-set cases. A total of 100 examples of the model was made across all case materials.

The present example Opus V in pink gold numbered 34 is offered in attractive overall condition and has become one of the most sought after Opus models over the years. A great opportunity for collectors of important timepieces to acquire a rare and highly desirable wristwatch by Felix Baumgartner and Harry Winston.
