  • Catalogue Essay

Notable for its dedication to preserving rare handcrafts of horology tradition such as enameling, engraving, gem-setting and wood marquetry, these breathtaking disciplines require years of training to master and are now a scarce trade. To mark the 175th anniversary of Patek Philippe, the firm launched a series of timepieces showcasing the firm’s creativity and virtuosity of the world’s finest artisans.

Part of the collection, the reference 5089 are comprised of three sets of four Calatrava designs, each highlighting one of the finest skills of art. Paying tribute to the center of watchmaking Geneva, these Calatrava depicts Lake Geneva barques with Cloisonné enameling inspired by paintings from the personal collection of Philippe Stern. Followed by Breeze and Storm hand engraved with scenery of Geneva harbor and the fine old Lake Geneva barques with their lateen sails. Finally, like the present example, the lakeside scenes inspired by old postcards and decorated with the precious technique of wood marquetry. Master marquetarians meticulously apply extremely thin veneers with over 166 pieces of wood and 45 incrustations of 15 variant of wood. Extremely painstaking, each crafted with the highest precision to shape, and finally assembled on a plate of solid gold.

The series paints a united scenery of Geneva in four individual masterpieces:

5089G-017: Old Lake Leman barque and Château de Chillon
5089G-018: Old Lake Leman barque in Geneva harbour
5089G-019: Old Lake Leman barque with view of the Alps
5089G-020: Old Lake Leman barque in Geneva harbour (present example)

Rare and produced in a limited series of 40 pieces each, the sophisticated Calatrava timepiece houses the ultra-thin self-winding caliber 240 where the wearer can admire through the sapphire crystal on the reverse, protected by a hinged cover, the caseback is graced with “175th Anniversaire 1839-2014” engraving. Fresh-to-the-market and first time at auction, the present 5089G-020 is offered by the original owner in extremely attractive condition with hardly any wrist time is complete with its set of full accessories. Such masterpiece of artisanal excellence is truly rare and an opportunity not to miss for the discerning collectors of Patek Philippe.
