  • Catalogue Essay

The legendary Omega Speedmaster is one of the world’s most iconic timepiece that took an important step in the history of mankind. Powering this robust icon was the beautifully intricate movement caliber 321, the first movement ever used in Speedmaster during 1957. Small but mighty, the cal. 321 based on the distinguished Lemania 2310 ébauche captivated the hearts of vintage chronograph enthusiast.

In 2020, Omega announced the return of the legend with the present stainless steel reference 311.30.40.30.01.001. Praised by the community, the stunning remake of the timepiece takes blueprints from the ref. 105.003, the model that was on the wrist of astronaut Ed White during the first American spacewalk Gemini 4 mission in 1965, hence the moniker “Ed White”. Taking faithful design cues from the original timepiece, the re-edition features all desired elements: steel case with straight lugs, the classic dot-over-90 bezel (now in ceramic), matte grained stepped dial with a dose of cream hue on the indexes, as well as the absence of crown guards. Fitted with the flat link bracelet reminiscent of the vintage 1039 version found on the ref. 105.003ST, the entire Speedmaster has an incredible cohesive vintage appeal. Assembled in artisanal fashion, the reference is assembled and regulated by a single watchmaker. Such highly remarkable mechanism is proudly exposed under a sapphire caseback. Offered in like new condition with its full accessories and impressive presentation box, the present Ed White is a superb edition of the classic Moonwatch for the Speedy lover.

  • Artist Biography

    Omega

    Swiss • 1848

Omega's rich history begins with its founder, Louis Brandt, who established the firm in 1848 in La Chaux de Fonds. In 1903, the company changed its name to Omega, becoming the only watch brand in history to have been named after one its own movements. A full-fledged manufacturer of highly accurate, affordable and reliable watches, its sterling reputation enabled them to be chosen as the first watch company to time the Olympic Games beginning in 1932. Its continued focus on precision and reliability ultimately led their Speedmaster chronograph wristwatch to be chosen by NASA in 1965 — the first watch worn on the moon.

Key models sought-after by collectors include their first, oversized water-resistant chronograph — the reference 2077, early Speedmaster models such as the CK 2915 and 2998, military-issued versions of the Seamaster and oversized chronometer models such as those fitted with their prestigious caliber 30T2Rg.
