  • Catalogue Essay

In 2010, Cartier unveiled the Calibre de Cartier, simply named to celebrate the firm’s new triumph in watchmaking, it is fitted with the first automatic in-house movement cal. 1904 MC, which pays homage to the very birth year of the firm’s first wristwatch for Alberto Santos Dumont. The present example in stainless steel strikes a perfect balance between power and finesse. Measuring at a robust 45mm diameter, the stunning black dial bears signature design codes of Cartier such the Roman numerals with the discrete logo at 11 o’clock. Dominated with masculine presence, the oversized XII numeral shines harmoniously with the mirrored polish center second ring. Adding attraction to the timepiece is the hexagon crown decorated with a sapphire cabochon. Handsome in proportions, spectators can also admire the movement from its sapphire case back. Furthermore, the present example is offered in excellent condition from its original owner.

    Cartier

    French

With the Constitution of 1848 came a new standard for luxury in France. Founded one year prior by Louis-Francois Cartier, the house of Cartier was one of the first to use platinum in jewelry making. This incredibly expensive material became the stepping-stone for Cartier to experiment in form, mechanisms and attitude. It helped men move from pocket watches to wristwatches, effectively making the watch much more functional and prominent in a man's overall wardrobe.

Cartier did not only touch on functionality. Inspired by a commissioned painting by George Barbier featuring a black panther at the feet of an elegantly bejeweled woman, Cartier began incorporating wild animals in his designs—most notably, Cartier Panthère rings, bangle bracelets and watches. Yet it wasn't until the late 1960s that the house of Cartier debuted their iconic yellow and rose gold LOVE collection, which includes the famous bracelet that only a special screwdriver can open.
