  • Catalogue Essay

Notable as the first Royal Oak’s 36mm mid-sized collection, the reference 14790 unveils to the world in 1992 and further expands its reach to a wider audience with its modest proportion. During the abundant lifespan of the reference 14790, Audemars Piguet phased its design nuance in three generations, with the first reminiscing dearest to the core vintage model “Jumbo” ref. 5402, and gradually evolves towards a modern interpretation of the design. The three series embodies distinctive dial designs, and can be characterised as follow:

First series (1992) features vintage-style Audemars Piguet signature, flat top “A” in Automatic signature at 6 o’clock, petite tapisserie, long indexes.

Second series (1993 to 2000) features Audemars Piguet signature with capitalised “A” and “P”, pointed top “A” in Automatic signature at 6 o’clock, petite tapisserie, long indexes. (Like the present example)

Third series (2000-2005) features Audemars Piguet signature & Automatic sits within a small cartouche, enlarged tapisserie, and short indexes.

With the longest production span of 7 years, the second series is one where the firm experimented a great variety of dial colours and case metals. The present second series example cased in a lavish yellow gold in contrast with the monochromatic grey dial is highly appealing. Attest to time, the dial has developed an attractive light grey patina that further heightens its vintage charm.
