  • Catalogue Essay

In 2019, the firm once again pushed the boundaries even further with the release of the first sports luxury grand complication, the reference 5520P Alarm Travel Time. Five years in making and engineered with four new patent applications, this entirely new integrated movement—combination of the dual time zone and an alarm mechanism— is adorned with the Patek Philippe Seal with highest level of finishing and precision. The calibre AL 20-660 S C FUS composed of 574 parts with a power reserve of 52 hours of high performance.

Designed for the modern day travellers on the move, the alarm mechanism of this timepiece is truly unique. Operated by the interlock pusher at 2 o’clock decorated with a small bell-shaped design, it triggers a hammer which strikes a gong that encircles the movement, chiming in single, pleasurable gentle notes. The function is incredibly intuitive and easy to operate, the inclusion of the small bell-shaped aperture below the 12 o’clock marker provides a convenient visual indicator of whether the alarm has been set on(white) or off(black). Directly below is a digital display of the set alarm time and can be adjusted in 15-minutes increments, and has its own day/night indicator just underneath the apertures. The classiness of its chimes is without doubt an elegant reminder in any meeting without disrupting a gentlemen’s elegance.
The 5520P is the very first water-resistant complication alarm and gong striking function fused into one. Intriguing and highly impressive complication timepiece, Phillips is proud to offer the present 5520P with its first debut at auction.
