Patek Philippe cloisonné enamel dome clocks have increased in value and collectability over the last decade, and are appreciated for their mid-20th century cutting edge technology and exquisite handcraftsmanship with each example a unique piece featuring a variety of themes. Patek Philippe opened their Electronic Division in 1948 to develop photoelectric, electronic and nuclear timekeeping technologies with the first known enamel dome clock dating to 1957. Since then the brand has continued to release these rare desk clocks, and in the ensuing years Patek Philippe’s enamelists have become well-known and respected artisans in the international market.
Cloisonné enameling requires precision, and persistence to execute, and only a small number of artists are qualified to work on these unique timepieces, which can take up to a year to complete. The work is made more difficult due to the curved panels where the enamel lies. The present clock features the signature “L. Rhee” a little known enamellist, with this the third example to be offered at auction. Their work is based on nature with the other two clocks featuring “butterflies” and “water fowl” enamel panels.
The present Patek Philippe solar dome clock from 2008 is an elegant and exquisite piece featuring “Neige de Printemps” or Spring Snow. The Japanese style theme reminiscent of Yukio Mishima’s 1960s serial is set with Japanese Cranes in a snowy landscape. The rust orange background enamel contrasts with the white and red cloisonné enamel of the crane’s feathers, the bright snow, and green foliage. The crane symbolizes longevity, luck and fidelity. The dial with Breguet numerals is further decorated with enamel work in the corners executed in the same style.
