Every collector has the ultimate coveted piece that stands above all the rest in their heart, often rare and almost unattainable, these grails are considered to be the pinnacles of collecting amongst the community. Widely regarded as one of the greatest timepieces designed by Patek Philippe, the reference 2499 is one of such timepieces that holds the repute. This serially-produced manual-winding perpetual calendar chronograph complication is quintessential Patek. Produced from 1950 until 1985 as a successor of the prestigious reference 1518, only 349 pieces were ever made with an average of 9 pieces per year, spanning across four metals with the rarest being platinum and four distinct series of evolution.
The present example from 1977 is part of the last production from the third series just before its transition. It is believed that about 120 pieces were manufactured amongst this series with most in yellow gold, and less than a dozen in pink gold and white gold. Encased in an attractive yellow gold case made by the celebrated casemaker, Wenger, identifiable by the No.1 key mark stamped on the inside caseback, and fitted with a beautiful silvered satin finish gold hard enamel dial, this specimen is preserved in an appealing condition and deemed to be a profound piece.
Previously offered by the family of the original owner, it is the second time that the present example is offered publicly. Furthermore, it is delivered with its original certificate and a Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives affirming its production, and its presentation box.
