With an extensive heritage in producing some of the world’s most impressive chronograph timepieces, the very first Patek Philippe chronograph wristwatch dates back to the 1920s. Today, the prestigious manufacturer continues to create wonders with its diverse range of ultra-high quality chronograph timepieces. One of the finest examples in the lineage today is the elegant ref. 5950 single-button split-seconds chronograph.
First introduced at the Baselword 2010, the reference was introduced only in stainless steel with varying dial configurations as well as some examples fitted with Patek Philippe’s signature rice bead style bracelet. Powering the astounding timepiece is the firm’s very first in-house chronograph cal. CHR 27-525 PS, first seen in the ref. 5959 in 2005, which is still today the thinnest column-wheel chronograph caliber ever made. Incorporating a number of technical features such as, teeth geometry and a clutching and unclutching system for the chronograph mechanism, the incredible thickness of only 5.25mm allows for its opulently thin cushion-shaped case.
Combining both technical prowess with timeless traditional aesthetics, the ref. 5950 takes its inspiration from early cushion-shaped chronograph wristwatches manufactured by the firm from the late 1920s. While these exquisite timepieces are very limitedly produced, there are 6 known variants of the reference in stainless steel offered to the public. In 2016, Patek Philippe released an example in 18K pink gold with a grained silvered dial and matching applied pink gold Breguet numerals, leaf hands and decorative corners, limited to 15 pieces. Extremely attractive and a rare timepiece to acquire, the reference is offered to only the most loyal and important clients of Patek Philippe.
The present example Patek Philippe ref. 5950R-001 preserved in “like new” overall condition and accompanied by its original Certificate of Origin from circa 2019, is no less than a fantastic sight to behold.
