Artist, painter, and designer, Gérald Genta (1931-2011) fulfilled many roles during his career, however he is probably best-known for his impact on the world of haute horologerie. For a gentleman who once said “I don’t like watches” his oeuvre is undeniable and he designed two of the most iconic wristwatches known today, Patek Philippe’s Nautilus, and Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. Genta created his own firm in 1969 leaving behind a legacy of iconic timepieces from his retrograde and bi-retrograde models, to grande complications. His watches often had a playful quality and in the 1980s he released a line of licensed Disney character timepieces, which remain collectors’ favourites. As a young boy, Genta began an apprenticeship at the age of 15 with a jewellery business, and throughout his life he had a passion for jewellery design, and this is reflected in many of his timepieces and clocks.
The present lot is quintessentially Gérald Genta with the perpetual calendar desk clock exemplary of his combination of complicated movements and intricate gem-set design. The pavé-set diamond dial is set with three gilt subsidiary dials for day, date and month combined with leap year indication and red hands, while the moon phase is highlighted in lapis lazuli. The diamond, ruby and sapphire-set surrounding frame is attached to a retractable stand allowing the clock to sit upright.
Presented in excellent overall condition, this Gérald Genta clock is a wonderful collectible from one of the most important watch designers of the late 20th century.
