  • Catalogue Essay

Breguet, a brand of elegance, tradition and craftsmanship, all of which witnessed in the reference 5447. The perpetual calendar has played a major role in the history of watchmaking, as it is complicated to achieve and impressive when it is. Breguet was the first manufacturer to produce a wristwatch with a perpetual calendar in 1929 featuring an impressively small caliber measuring at just 22.5mm. The reference 4244 was an incredible milestone for Breguet, as all perpetual calendar wristwatches manufactured today by Breguet are inspired by the very first. The watch was sold to Monsieur Jean Dollfus, a regular client of the company for CHF 11,000 in 1939.

The reference 5447 is part of the Breguet Classique Grand Complications family. In addition to the complexity of the perpetual calendar mechanism, it also houses a minute repeater inside a rather small platinum case. The chime on this present example is prominent and impressive. When flipped to the caseback side, it is immediately evident the level of craftsmanship displayed elegantly on the hand-engraved bridges are one of the most impressive features of this reference. The combination of its mechanical complexity and its intricate aesthetics is without a doubt a value that Breguet has never ceased to fail.

The present example is cased in platinum and is further presented in excellent overall condition with very minimal signs of use and wear. Adding to the attraction, the present example is accompanied by the full set of accessories that came with the watch when it was purchased by the original owner.

  • Artist Biography

    Breguet

    Swiss • 1775

Established in 1775 by Abraham Louis Breguet, widely considered the greatest watchmaker of all time, the storied brand continues to thrive in the modern era, creating exceptional high-end watches as the Swatch Group's premier prestige brand. Some of the most important and lasting inventions in watchmaking are attributed to Abraham Louis Breguet, including the tourbillon, shock resistance and the use of hammers and gongs employed in nearly all minute repeating watches made since.

Eighteenth and nineteenth century Breguet pocketwatches are especially sought-after by collectors, and many of them were made for the elite of European society, including Napoléon and Marie Antoinette. Key wristwatches from the twentieth century include oversized dress watches, two-register chronographs, triple calendars and Type XX aviator's chronographs made for the French military and civilians.
