Catalogue Essay
Rubies have been unearthed in East-Africa since around 1970. Though most materials are highly included and only suitable to be cut as cabochons, their colours rival the best Burmese rubies. Another promising source in the continent which produced specimens of much higher quality was discovered in mid 80s. In recent years, many important jewelry houses have also started to incorporate African rubies into their designs. Given the skyrocketed prices of Burmese rubies, many collectors turn to newer origins. This natural unheated ruby, weighing over 12 carats and clean enough to be fashioned into a step-cut beauty, represents one of best East-African stones found in the market today.
