Japanese painter and sculptor Takeru Amano is known for reinventing classical, mythological subjects with neo-pop aesthetics and a touch of humour. As a son of famous Japanese visual artist Yoshitaka Amano, Takeru Amano lives and breathes art since childhood. To arrive at his own style, he incorporates various working methods including painting, printmaking, sculpture, and design. For him, art is not a vehicle for social and political commentaries, but purely aesthetic exploration of ideas.
Amano’s continued interest in exploring the female veneer gave birth to his signature character, Venus, an anime-styled nude female, often depicted in tantalizing poses. Namesake of this character, the current work brings immediate and captivating sensory shock to the fore through depictions of sensual female nude set against neon-coloured background. The figure, though delineated with simple lines, leaves a three-dimensional impression to the viewer through the use of explosive background colours by the artist.
Having shown work in Asia and Europe, Amano held his first Hong Kong solo exhibition at APPortfolio from 8 to 10 October 2021.
