Released at Baselworld 2017, the ref. 5320G is an entirely new self-winding perpetual calendar model with strong inspirations from the past. A pioneer for perpetual calendar wristwatches, Patek Philippe was the first manufacturer to introduce a perpetual calendar wristwatch dating back to 1925. However, it was not until the early 1940’s when the firm released the first serially produced wristwatch featuring a perpetual calendar and a chronograph function via the ref. 1518. A year later, in 1942 Patek Philippe released the perpetual calendar only ref. 1526. Furthermore, in 1962 Patek Philippe introduced another yet milestone reference 3448, and it was the world’s first self-winding perpetual calendar wristwatch holding its reign for over 16 years being the only self-winding perpetual calendar model available in the market.
The ref. 5320G combines both inspiration from its past greats with modernized aesthetics. At immediate glance, one may notice the unusual ivory hued lacquered dial and its fancy three-tiered step lugs. The ivory lacquered dial generates a vintage appeal to its symmetrical dial layout featuring its classic day and month apertures above the signature with a subsidiary dial positioned at 6 O’clock displaying the date and moon phases. Taking inspiration from the chronometer ref. 2405 from the 1940’s, the three-tiered stepped lugs featured on the in-house manufactured case transcends an art deco aura to the present timepiece.
Paying homage to the great perpetual calendar timepieces from the mid-20th century, the ref. 5320G is certainly a well-executed contemporary iteration. Presented in excellent “like new” overall condition and accompanied by the full set of accessories including an additional solid caseback, the present specimen is without a doubt a very desirable modern perpetual calendar wristwatch by Patek Philippe with strong recognition from its roots.
Since its founding in 1839, this famous Geneva-based firm has been surprising its clientele with superbly crafted timepieces fitted with watchmaking's most prestigious complications. Traditional and conservative designs are found across Patek Philippe's watches made throughout their history — the utmost in understated elegance.
Well-known for the Graves Supercomplication — a highly complicated pocket watch that was the world’s most complicated watch for 50 years — this family-owned brand has earned a reputation of excellence around the world. Patek's complicated vintage watches hold the highest number of world records for results achieved at auction compared with any other brand. For collectors, key models include the reference 1518, the world's first serially produced perpetual calendar chronograph, and its successor, the reference 2499. Other famous models include perpetual calendars such as the ref. 1526, ref. 3448 and 3450, chronographs such as the reference 130, 530 and 1463, as well as reference 1436 and 1563 split seconds chronographs. Patek is also well-known for their classically styled, time-only "Calatrava" dress watches, and the "Nautilus," an iconic luxury sports watch first introduced in 1976 as the reference 3700 that is still in production today.
