The Omega Speedmaster can be regarded as one of the most professional tool watches ever made with an incredible history and contribution to space travels. Robust and reliable the Omega Speedmaster was the first ever timepiece to ever surface the moon in 1969. However, prior to the important event, Omega has been rigorously testing and upgrading the Speedmaster to tackle the task via the ref. 145.012 and 105.012.
Introduced in 1967 and remaining in production until the first half of 1969, the ref. 145.012 was the last Speedmaster reference to utilize the famous manual cal. 321. Differing from the ref. 105.012, the ref. 145.012 featured newly upgraded chronograph pushers that sits slightly higher with taller caps. The reference was witnessed on the wrists of astronauts Michael Collins (Apollo 11), Alan Shepard (Apollo 14) and Tom Stafford (Apollo-Soyuz). The picture perfect ref. 145.012-67 SP should be reflected inside the caseback, a type B1 dot diagonal 70 bezel, a spaced “T” dial, a 1039/516 stainless steel bracelet and a serial number from 24.066 million to usually 26.554 million with rare examples bearing 27.320 million serial.
Vintage Omega Speedmasters are one of the most collected and celebrated timepieces, however it is extremely tough to find examples presented in excellent overall condition and with its original warranty and box. Omega's rich history begins with its founder, Louis Brandt, who established the firm in 1848 in La Chaux de Fonds. In 1903, the company changed its name to Omega, becoming the only watch brand in history to have been named after one its own movements. A full-fledged manufacturer of highly accurate, affordable and reliable watches, its sterling reputation enabled them to be chosen as the first watch company to time the Olympic Games beginning in 1932. Its continued focus on precision and reliability ultimately led their Speedmaster chronograph wristwatch to be chosen by NASA in 1965 — the first watch worn on the moon.
