Initially launched in the 1950’s, the Breguet Type XX was designed for the French Naval Airforce as a professional tool watch for pilots. The specification was a 38mm diameter stainless steel case fitted with a black dial with white luminous numerals and hands, featuring a flyback chronograph complication with a 12-Hour rotating bezel with an accuracy +/- 8 seconds a day and a power reserve of more than 35 hours. Breguet did just that by launching the Type XX.
The present Breguet Type XXI ref. 3810, is a modern iteration of what was once worn on the wrists of a fighter pilot. With a slightly pumped up case size to 42.5mm diameter, the dial and the case remains almost identical to its forefather. The dial features the original 3 subsidiary dials, however with an additional minutes counter via the outer minute track and an extra hand. The flyback chronograph is retained with an additional date feature positioned at 6 O’clock. Furthermore, the large white luminous Arabic numerals are retained against a sleek smoky grey dial. The present example is offered in excellent overall condition with very minimal signs of wear.
Established in 1775 by Abraham Louis Breguet, widely considered the greatest watchmaker of all time, the storied brand continues to thrive in the modern era, creating exceptional high-end watches as the Swatch Group's premier prestige brand. Some of the most important and lasting inventions in watchmaking are attributed to Abraham Louis Breguet, including the tourbillon, shock resistance and the use of hammers and gongs employed in nearly all minute repeating watches made since.
Eighteenth and nineteenth century Breguet pocketwatches are especially sought-after by collectors, and many of them were made for the elite of European society, including Napoléon and Marie Antoinette. Key wristwatches from the twentieth century include oversized dress watches, two-register chronographs, triple calendars and Type XX aviator's chronographs made for the French military and civilians.
