In this poignant multimedia piece, ren zi explores the challenges faced by humans and nonhumans who reside in the equatorial belt, such as climate change and environmental degradation, whilst posing the question, “Can we imagine a viable tropic?”. under an unruly sun depicts an imaginary landscape in which culture exists harmoniously alongside nature, featuring overlapping organic and urban forms. Rather than focusing on capitalistic narratives of exploitation and extraction, the artist directs our focus towards how we must renegotiate our relationship with nature.

ren zi is a Singapore artist whose practice explores the inner landscapes of the human psyche. As a self-taught artist, he has been awarded numerous grants from Singapore’s National Arts Council and Singapore International Foundation. He has presented several solo exhibitions locally such as naming the bright & dark stars at Jada Art Gallery in 2017 and Singapore Twilight at Art Porters Gallery in 2019.
