  • Catalogue Essay

This watch, from Omega's 100th Anniversary series, is something of a forgotten treasure and I am always surprised it doesn't draw more attention. The movement is a NOS 30mm Caliber 269 that Omega brought out from their archives and refinished for their historic milestone. All the watches in this series were re-imaginings of classic Omega Chronometers made to modern standards. This variation is among my favourites of the series: a Japan market special featuring a striking blue ring upon which the sans serif Roman numerals sit. - Mark Cho

To the new owners of the watches in the sale: The Armoury will custom-make the winner one of The Armoury’s signature garments as a gift. For further details please visit the link below.

    - The Omega Centenary 1894 series was unveiled in 1994 in commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the 1894 Omega caliber, the very movement that granted the brand its name.

    - While all 1894 models feature a sector dial design with crosshair division, applied Roman numerals, oversized subsidiary seconds register, and gold feuille hands, the ref. 5950.31.03 is one of a collection of three references made exclusively for the Japanese market only. Each a limited edition of 1894 pieces, the dial design of the “Japan Set” is notably differed from the standard 1894 series, marketed for the rest of the world. Exceedingly rare, the present example stands out with its distinct pink gold dial with a contrasting navy-blue hour chapter. Powered by a simple yet compelling manual-winding cal. 269, its beating heart is visible through the sapphire display back.

    - Numbered 1472 of 1894 examples, the present ref. 5950.31.03 is offered in excellent overall condition with its original warranty, further confirming its Japanese heritage.

  • Artist Biography

    Omega

    Swiss • 1848

Omega's rich history begins with its founder, Louis Brandt, who established the firm in 1848 in La Chaux de Fonds. In 1903, the company changed its name to Omega, becoming the only watch brand in history to have been named after one its own movements. A full-fledged manufacturer of highly accurate, affordable and reliable watches, its sterling reputation enabled them to be chosen as the first watch company to time the Olympic Games beginning in 1932. Its continued focus on precision and reliability ultimately led their Speedmaster chronograph wristwatch to be chosen by NASA in 1965 — the first watch worn on the moon.

Key models sought-after by collectors include their first, oversized water-resistant chronograph — the reference 2077, early Speedmaster models such as the CK 2915 and 2998, military-issued versions of the Seamaster and oversized chronometer models such as those fitted with their prestigious caliber 30T2Rg.
