  • Catalogue Essay

'This portfolio consists of eight color photographs with hand-painted, acrylic additions published by Patrick Painter Editions. The photographs are snapshots of familiar routes taken by the artist in his hometown of National City, just south of San Diego. Baldessari applied paint directly to the photos to remove what he saw as flaws. As the title suggests, the prints should be installed in a horizontal row from the lightest (W=white) to the darkest (B=dark) circle, and numbered sequentially (1-6) in between the two letters.

Two of the edition of eight were printed and painted in 1996. For technical reasons, the rest of the edition was not completed at the time and was later completed in 2009. These remaining ten portfolios and proofs are archival ink jet prints on Epson Semi Matte Photo paper (250g/m) with Epson K3 inks in Photo Black. The substrate is 1/8 inch white Sintra® and the adhesive is Neschen Gudy 831. The paint is Liquitex Acrylic (Ivory Black and Titanium White) and Ultra Matte Medium. Each print has an archival label on Angelica Ultra White Smooth paper with the adhesive Gudy 831. Aside from a few differences (the first two are C prints mounted to 4-ply rag board), the edition is consistent and the production of the remaining works was overseen by the artist's studio.'
