  • Catalogue Essay

In the summer of 2017, the synergy between TAG Heuer and HODINKEE resulted in a refreshing contemporary take on the prized Heuer Carrera Skipper Reference 7754, also known as the very first ‘Skipperera’.

The inception of the Skipperera dates back to 1967, when the esteemed American yachtsman Emil Mosbacher wore the timepiece on his wrist as he skippered the winning team on board the “Intrepid” at the 20th edition America’s Cup. The following year, Jack Heuer commissioned the Carrera Skipper Reference 7754 to commemorate the historic victory. Only a small batch of 20 known examples were made at the time and its exclusivity was heightened as the model was excluded from the Heuer catalogue. For decades the watch remained incognito, and only came into the limelight around 2008 upon its discovery by Heuer enthusiasts.

In honor of the 50th anniversary of Emil Mosbacher’s triumph, TAG Heuer and HODINKEE joined forces to recreate a revival tribute to the Carrera icon. Staying faithful to the distinctive color scheme from the original model, the new design was reimagined thanks to the Tag Heuer Caliber 18 with a single sub-dial with a 30 minute counter (referencing the Skipper ref 7754), and an addition of a date display at 3 o’clock (referencing the Dato 45 ref 3147) fitted in an upsized 39mm diameter case. Under the modern “glassbox” case which has a domed sapphire crystal reminiscent of the profile of the vintage models, the bright orange chronograph hand certainly is the charming highlight of the timepiece. A sold out smashing success upon the launch of the present Carrera Skipper, the model also enjoyed strong cult following with a stunning result in our PHILLIPS Geneva Watch Auction XIII for CHF23,940. Offered by the original owner and kept in excellent overall condition, the HODINKEE Limited Edition Carrera Skipper is an unforgettably attractive sports watch that embodies the synthesis of past and present.

These specialized timepieces have been at the heart of the firm's success, enabling the brand to be chosen as early timekeepers for the Olympics. In 1969, the company introduced their first automatic chronograph watch, the Monaco Heuer, which celebrated the Monaco Grand Prix.
