Revealing tensions between materiality and space, Tomas Saraceno’s Connectome is a paragon of the Argentinian artist’s experimental approach to art, combining his love of crafts and his fascination for environmental phenomena. Taking on the artist’s signature spider-web structure, the present installation consists of a suspended mirror looking directly into an identically dimensioned alter-ego hovering slightly above the ground; the two reflective agents are tied together by an intricate weave of ropes loosely deployed at the extremities, and tightened up at the centre. Connectome resembles a slim tree trunk of which the roots germinate below, and the branches prosper overhead, while simultaneously recalling the symmetrical composition of an hourglass. Executed with materials and methods that reveal the intricacies of space –the reflection in the two mirrors alters with shifting environments, and the knotted ropes carry with them the constant possibility of disentanglement– Connectome exudes atmospheric vibrations, that, in turn, allow an awakening or augmentation of the senses.
