For Zhou Yangming, art is a means of accessing one’s spirituality. Initially an oil painter, the Taizhou-based artist abandoned the techniques that characterised his early practice to shape a unique artistic language of his own. Populated by deftly manipulated lines and dots, the artist’s interwoven canvases act as a testament to his commitment to self-cultivation.
Gazing into the intricate latticed surface of the present lot, the viewer feels as though they are sinking into a liminal space of movement and transformation. Zhou Yangming disregards formal expectations and charts his own artistic path, weaving together an oeuvre that forms its own temporal realm. Leaving small spaces in between each shape, the artist blots the canvas with soft-hued colour fields. Layering line upon line, dot upon dot, a kinetic landscape surfaces – pulsing like a heartbeat, ebbing and flowing like the tide, the present lot offers the viewer a moment of humble contemplation.
Zhou Yangming has studied at various art institutions, namely the China Academy of Art, Academy of Arts and Design of Tsinghua University, and Xu Beihong’s studio at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. Having lived and worked in Beijing’s Yuan Ming Yuan village; Dong village; Song Zhuang artist village, China’s largest art district; and Shanghai, the artist has returned to his birthplace of Taizhou to continue his practice. Zhou Yangming’s works have been exhibited extensively in China. The artist debuted in Hong Kong with Begin Again (2017) at Pearl Lam Galleries; his works have also been exhibited in Germany, Taiwan, and Singapore. The artist’s works are featured in prominent collections in China and Germany.
