Faces and Phases stands as Zanele Muholi’s visual record of the lives of Black, queer people in post-apartheid South Africa. Muholi’s monochromatic portraits are a testament to the artist’s mission to remedy black queer invisibility. Without any artifice or decoration, the bold portraits highlight the resilience of the LGBTQIA+ community amidst a culture of violence and discrimination, while celebrating the rich diversity of Black queer life. By dignifying the members of an often marginalized and voiceless community, Faces and Phases promotes self-expression and pride, reclaiming visibility.
