Singapore visual artist Yanyun Chen critically examines the theme of artifice in this striking set of works from her series False Truths. These artworks were created in response to the passing of the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act in Singapore in May 2019. Through them, Chen hopes to urge the viewer to reflect on the difficulties of discerning the truth from fiction. Renowned for her representations of flowers, Chen employs the charcoal aesthetic of her previous works but injects a sense of artificiality. Collaborating with visual effects artist Alex Scollay, Chen tapped into AI technology to create computer-generated models of flowers. Adding to the sense of deception, plastic and silk flowers are hidden amidst real, withering flowers.

Chen explores how heritage and legacies are represented in human and botanical forms. Her artworks examine the notion of embodiment and have earned her numerous accolades including the IMPART Art Prize and the Young Artist Award in 2019 and 2020 respectively.
