  • Catalogue Essay

From Grimms’ fantastical stories of the nineteenth century to modern Disney animated films, fairies often represent joyousness, hope and dream. These mythic creatures are able to evoke pleasant memories of everyone‘s imagination-imbued childhood.

The present wristwatch, the Arpels Féerie, made by the highly-esteemed Van Cleef & Arpels, brings the magical wonders from fairy tales into a tangible object. Thanks to its ingenious bi-retrograde movement, the fairy figure on the dial, fascinatingly adorned with fine diamonds, points out the hour with her magic wand, while one of her delicate wings draw the hours. The eye is drawn from the diamond-set fairy figure to the gorgeously crafted blue guilloché enamel dial. The dazzling silhouette of the fairy pops out from the graceful guilloche-patterned blue dial, further inspiring awes of its beholders. The breathtakingly beautiful blue dial is complimented with a matching satin strap.

A watch is not simply a timekeeping tool. Today, more and more women appreciate the charm of a complex movement, particularly if it is matched with a wondrous, truly appealing look. A wondrous amalgamation of fine jewelry and Haute Horlogerie, the present lot epitomizes the best of both worlds.

  • Artist Biography

    Van Cleef & Arpels

When Alfred Van Cleef and Estelle Arpels fell in love, their marriage paved the way for iconic jewelry house Van Cleef & Arpels to become a symbol of unification. With their background in precious stone dealing, the Arpels found their perfect match in the Van Cleefs, a family of expert stonecutters. In 1906, Estelle's brother Charles established the company name with Alfred's help and opened shop in the Place Vendôme in Paris. To this day, this Parisian neighborhood is associated with turn-of-the-century luxury.

The Van Cleef & Arpels aesthetic has always had its finger on the pulse of worldwide trends: For example, the house took inspiration from Tutankhamen upon the Egyptian king's discovery in the 1920s, which spurred a global phenomenon marrying Egyptian Revival and Art Deco motifs. Over the decades, Van Cleef & Arpels has produced intricate watches, earrings and necklaces with a signature elegance that mirrors contemporary tastes.
