  • Catalogue Essay

A neo-classic born in 1983, the Vacheron Constantin ref. 43031 is one of the fundamental pillars of perpetual calendars. Perfectly sized at 36mm diameter, ultra-thin, self-winding, stamped with the Geneva Seal, and powered by the legendary JLC 920 movement, it is simply one of the best.

A production run for around two decades since 1983 until 2006, the ref. 43031 silhouette can be found in yellow gold and platinum with an annual production of 20 and up to 100 pieces.

Highly rare and dressed in yellow gold, the dial is studded with 194 brilliant-cut diamonds that sparkles with style. It’s rich blue sky of the moon phase is in fact made out of lapis lazuli which is highly desirable. It is also notable that while batons hands are used in regular models, the skeletonized and pavé diamonds variants like the present example bears Dauphine hands which are visually balanced and more legible.

According to our research, only three Vacheron Constantin ref. 43031 pavé diamonds set dial have publicly surfaced in the market: 1 Platinum case number 595’831, and 1 yellow gold with integrated bracelet case number 595’798, and finally the present example in yellow gold within the earlier serial range case number 595’812 paired on a strap.

Preserved by the owner with impeccable care with strong case and hallmarks, this ref. 43031 not only retains its original guarantee and presentation box, it is also delivered with a Vacheron Constantin certificate of authenticity that confirms the timepiece from 1991. With neo-vintage timepieces gaining prominence in recent times with their charm of vintage romance and modern convenience, this perpetual calendar will surely occupy the hearts of collectors and decades to come.

  • Artist Biography

    Vacheron Constantin

    Swiss • 1755

The world's oldest watch brand in continuous operation since its founding in 1755, Vacheron Constantin was the first watch company to manufacture movements with interchangeable parts beginning in 1839. Vacheron's watches are admired for their Latin-influenced case designs, well-balanced proportions and exquisitely finished movements of the highest quality. The Geneva-based manufacturer is known for their highly complicated masterpieces, including the King Farouk Grand Complication made in 1935, the Tour de l'Ile that was the most complicated serially produced wristwatch when introduced in 2005 and the 57260 — the world’s most complicated watch — made in 2015.

Key vintage models include minute repeating wristwatches such as the references 4261, chronographs such as the references 4178 and 6087 and the oversized Cioccolotone models such as ref. 4737. Collectors also appreciate Vacheron's Chronometer Royal pocket and wristwatches, as well as the '222,' the brand's first luxury sports watch produced from 1977 through 1984.
