Under the stewardship of Peter Baumberger and watchmaker Derek Pratt, Urban Jürgensen was revived amidst the Quartz Crisis in the 1980s. It was the time when watchmaking brands reaffirmed their relevance in mechanical watch manufacturing, and elaborated on ultra-thin movements and refined complications. Produced between 1986-1993, the Reference 2 produced in a total of 172 pieces across four metals: yellow, pink, white gold and platinum. It is highly sought-after by collectors for its distinctive Baumberger-Pratt era elements — a moderate yet elegant 38mm case with stepped bezel, graceful teardrop lugs, and engined turned clous de Paris and panier guilloché. The present watch is more than that, it is an exceptional prototype indicated by the “PROTO” inscription on the dial. According to scholarship, only two Reference 2 prototype are known: yellow gold (Sold by Phillips), and the present in pink gold.

Both watch are housed with an ultra-thin self-winding movement based on the Frédéric Piguet ébauche, topped with a perpetual calendar module developed by Pratt. While not fully decorated, both featured a gold rotor with industrial-looking circular Côtes de Genève. The bridges also featured Geneva striping but the edges of the bridges weren’t finished. The serial number 000-000 were engraved on the barrel bridge.

Not only a study of elegance, the present Reference 2 is an important relic of the revival of the historic brand, and a significant piece illustrating the mastery in watchmaking that stood as one of the icons of Baumberger-Pratt Urban Jürgensen. Offered in excellent condition and kept in a private collection for 18 years, it is a rare opportunity to acquire a timepiece of such historic importance.
