Born in Taipei in 1980, Tsai Charwei combined studies in industrial design at Rhode Island and fine art in Paris with a deep personal interest in Buddhist writings. In kind, her artistic vision incorporates a huge variety of materials and perspectives, with works including films, photographs, textiles, glass, and sutras written on other decaying materials. Lyrically executed with a sure practical touch, they balance immersive spiritual beauty with discursions on wider, pressing social issues.
Tsai’s work has appeared in prestigious exhibitions worldwide: recent group shows include the Rubin Museum of Art in New York, Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, and Bridge Projects in Los Angeles. She has also enjoyed solo shows with the Hayward Gallery in London and her gallery representative, TKG+ in Taiwan. Her works have been acquired by similarly renowned international collections, including the Tate Modern in London, M+ in Hong Kong, and Queensland Art Museum in Brisbane, while her journal of artists’ work and writings, Lovely Daze, has been collected by the Tate, MoMA in New York and the Pompidou Center in Paris.
