  • Susan Chen’s portraiture encapsulates larger themes of visibility, representation, race, community, and family. Urban and domestic scenes lay the groundwork for exploring a sense of interiority and home while grappling with the larger possibilities of figuration as a means of increased visibility and representation. Originally from Hong Kong and travelling to boarding school in the UK, Chen came to the United States and received her BA from Brown University and MFA from Columbia University. Some of her accolades include 2022 Forbes 30 under 30, she is a Hopper Prize Winner, and a residency at the Silver Art Projects.
