In 1936, Davis’ lithograph Anchor was published by the American Artists School, an institution that had opened earlier that year at 131 West 14th Street, for the avowed purpose of “[making] the student conscious of his social and economic environment, and to instruct him in suitable methods for its presentation.” Anchor was one of several printed issued as part of a fund-raising effort by the School.
