Part of a series titled Dioramas of industry, this artwork expands on Shen Jiaqi’s research into the lives and experiences of female factory workers in Singapore’s early days, during a period of industrialisation and modernisation. Inspired by photographs from the National Archives of Singapore, the artwork is a reimagining of the Starlite Ceramic Industry factory, which operated in Singapore during the 1960s. Enlarged peony flowers, which are popular features of the ceramic dishes created in this factory, adorn the imagined factory’s interior. With Dioramas of industry: Doing the dishes, Shen highlights the contributions of women during the 1960s, which have since been reduced to documentations on the economic success of the companies that employed them.

Shen interrogates social issues in urban environments and the longing for sanctuary in the city in her artistic practice. She received the 2021 UOB Painting of the Year High Commendation award and obtained her Master of Fine Art at LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore in 2022.
