    A formal edition of this print was never produced because it was too difficult for the printers to print 3-dimensionally, as Dali was envisioning!

    Dalí exhibited it (the painting La Corbeille de pain, 1945, Descharnes, p. 298), in the Recent Paintings show, held in the Bignou Gallery in New York, from the 20th of November to the 29th of December 1945, and in the catalogue he wrote about it: “I painted this work for two consecutive months, four hours a day. During this period the most surprising and sensational episodes occurred in contemporary history. This work was finished one day before the end of the war. Bread has always been one of the oldest fetishist and obsessive subject matters of my work, to which I have remained most faithful. Nineteen years ago I painted the same subject. If you make a detailed comparison between the two works, you can study the whole history of painting, from the lineal charm of primitivism through to the stereoscopic hyper-aestheticism. This typically realist work is the one that has most satisfied my imagination. Here we have a painting about which nothing can be said: the total enigma!”

    Salvador Dalí

    Salvador Dalí was perhaps the most broadly known member of the Surrealist movement of the early twentieth century. Heavily influenced by Sigmund Freud, the avant-garde style explored consciousness and dream-like states through exaggerated landscapes and bizarre or grotesque imagery. Using the means of painting, sculpture, printmaking, film and literature, Dalí explored these ideas with a meticulous hand and inventive wit. 

    Although known for his role in Surrealism, Dalí was also a seminal example of celebrity showmanship and the cult of personality, a phenomenon that dominates popular culture today. Always a colorful and flamboyant presence with his signature cape, wide-eyed expression and trademark upturned waxed mustache, Dalí was a master of self-promotion and spectacle.
