Rose Cameron honours the famous Filipino folklore surrounding the country’s national flower, Sampaguita, with Sumpa Kita (I Promise You). The artwork references the story of unparalleled love between a princess and a slave, and a king’s efforts to curtail their relationship, which leads to their eventual deaths. At the place of the lovers’ burial, the flower was said to grow abundantly; it thus became a symbol of love, devotion and strength. This piece forms part of a constantly evolving body of works titled Interwoven States in which the artist reconnects to her Filipino roots. Born in Manila and relocating with her family to the US when she was 12, the artist is committed to rediscovering and celebrating her Filipino identity. In her words, “My artistic approach is the exploration of the tension between what I am compelled to reveal and what I chose to conceal about myself and my complex relationship with my past as a young girl displaced from her native country and living with its consequences over time.”

Based in New York City, Cameron is represented by Sara Nightingale Gallery in New York, Laura Rathe Fine Art in Houston, and ISA Art gallery in Jakarta. Her works have been part of numerous international art shows such as the Venice International Art Fair, Le Carrousel du Louvre International Art Fair, the Los Angeles Art Show and Art Moments Jakarta.
