Released in 1989, the Submariner ref. 14060 is the direct successor to the long-lived ref. 5513 which was first launched in 1962. Featuring a glossy black lacquered dial with the absence of a date window, the ref. 14060 has become a fan favourite due to its clean and distinct appeal and being the last Submariner reference still with pinholes for ease of bracelet removal. Upgraded with a sapphire crystal, Triplock crown and powered by the cal. 3000, the result was a deeper depth rating of 300 meters.

In 2001, Rolex introduced the ref. 14060M with an upgraded cal. 3130. The present example with a “D” serial from circa 2006 still retains the reference’s “2-liner” dial and is offered in excellent condition with its full set of accessories. What makes this particular watch so special is the engravings on the caseback. According to the consigner, the original owner of this watch is Tim Gallagher, one of Nike’s contracted designers who had purchased this ref. 14060M at Carl Greve Jewelers in Portland Oregon in 2006. Mr Gallagher sent the watch to Rolex Service Center to engrave 'NIKE AIR' and 'AIR FORCE 1' logo on the caseback while he customized the outer and inner boxes for the collaboration with Nike Air Force 1. In addition to its original certificate written with Mr Gallagher’s name, the engravings are mentioned by its service estimates from Rolex Japan.

  • Artist Biography

    Rolex

    Swiss • 1905

Founded in 1905 England by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis as Wilsdorf & Davis, it soon became known as the Rolex Watch Company in 1915, moving its headquarters to Geneva in 1919. Like no other company, the success of the wristwatch can be attributed to many of Rolex's innovations that made them one of the most respected and well-known of all luxury brands. These innovations include their famous "Oyster" case — the world's first water resistant and dustproof watch case, invented in 1926 — and their "Perpetual" — the first reliable self-winding movement for wristwatches launched in 1933. They would form the foundation for Rolex's Datejust and Day-Date, respectively introduced in 1945 and 1956, but also importantly for their sports watches, such as the Explorer, Submariner and GMT-Master launched in the mid-1950s.

One of its most famous models is the Cosmograph Daytona. Launched in 1963, these chronographs are without any doubt amongst the most iconic and coveted of all collectible wristwatches. Other key collectible models include their most complicated vintage watches, including references 8171 and 6062 with triple calendar and moon phase, "Jean Claude Killy" triple date chronograph models and the Submariner, including early "big-crown" models and military-issued variants.
