  • Catalogue Essay

The Danish designer Poul Kjaerholm became interested in constructing a bentwood armchair in the early 1960s, but he became discouraged by the difficulty of such a task. He did not pick up the project again until 1979 when he finally executed the PK 15 armchair. This was still not an easy task, as he initially struggled to bend the wood without breaking it. He did, however, find several solutions such as turning the wooden legs on a lathe so that they would taper at the area in which the armrest and leg meet. The Danish joinery workshop PP Møbler further developed Kjaerholm’s construction method, and beginning in 1990, they produced approximately 300 chairs. The present lot belongs to this line of production. Kjaerholm’s designs have been internationally recognised and are the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the Vitra Museum in Germany, among other museum collections.
