Good to Know:
- Tourbillon with retrograde day and date
- Combining a rose gold case with a white dial, possibly the first of this kind to appear at auction
- Accompanied by its full set of accessories
Pierre Kunz is one of the more interesting names to emerge from the early years of modern independent watchmaking. Having trained under Franck Muller, he developed a particular interest in retrograde indications, a feature that became closely associated with his work.
The PKA 701 T JDR is a good example of that approach. The large tourbillon takes centre stage at 6 o’clock, while the day and date are displayed on two sweeping retrograde scales across the upper half of the dial. Rather than filling the dial with several small subsidiary counters, the layout gives the watch a much cleaner appearance and allows the tourbillon to remain the main visual focus.
The combination of the rose gold case and white dial is particularly appealing. The warm colour of the case gives the watch a classical feel, while the sharp, graphic layout of the dial and prominent tourbillon keep it firmly rooted in the independent watchmaking of its period.
Numbered 03, the present example is preserved in very good condition and is accompanied by its full set of accessories. With its unusual combination of complications, distinctive dial architecture and attractive rose gold and white colour scheme, never seen before at auction to the best of our knowledge, it is a particularly appealing example of Pierre Kunz’s early work.
