  • Catalogue Essay

'Philip-Lorca diCorcia involves us in the issues of story and plot by constructing tableaus that withhold information that we expect to be given.' — John Szarkowski

The photograph offered here is from the early phase of Philip-Lorca diCorcia’s career when his principal subjects were family and friends in his immediate circle. Intimate and casual in feel, these photographs were meticulously stage-managed and his subjects posed and lit with great attention to detail. Conceptually and technically sophisticated, each image situates its subject within a narrative that is evocative but deliberately left unresolved. Works from this series appear at auction infrequently.
