    • Catalogue Essay

Some watches are born to greatness. That is undoubtedly the case - thanks to a mix of deliberate design choices, serendipically unusual production run and historical heritage - of reference 5970.

Considered by many one of the best complicated watches ever made and a pinnacle of Patek Philippe production, the model was an instant classic already at the moment of its commercialisation, and in recent times has been discovered by the community at large, becoming one of the most sought-after (and difficult to source) Patek Philippe timepieces.

Aesthetically, it is defined by a melange of modernism and heritage. The case features a perfectly sized 40mm diameter, with some design details - such as the sculpted lugs - hinting at its ancestors (such as ref. 2499) but interpreted and executed with modern classicism. The same hold true for the dial, which features a very 1940s chemin-de-fer minute divisions but still feels like a timeless execution of contemporary aesthetic canons.

Such a coupling of modern and ancient souls is to be expected, as the model is a representative of one the longest running series of watches in continuous production made by Patek Philippe, the hallowed perpetual calendar chronograph line, which saw it inception in 1940 with ref. 1518 (followed by 2499 (1950-1987), 3970 (1987-2003), the present 5970 (2004 - 2010), and the current production 5270)

A testament to the perfection of its design is given by the lack of series. Normally, Patek Philippe timepieces present an evolution of subtle dial or case details, as feedback from the clients is incorporated in the production. Current production ref. 5270 for example - the heir to ref. 5970 - is now at its third Series. The exception is indeed the present model, which does not feature any Series: its one design was apparently perfect since its inception (some special dials are known, but those are special orders, not a different Series).

The manufacturing of the model history actually adds to the importance of the piece, as it is one of the modern references produced for the shortest time. Furthermore, while the model was made in the 4 classic precious metals - the three golds and platinum - no metal was in production for the entire run of the watch. The white gold version (together with the pink gold one) for example was in the catalogue for only 4 years: from 2004 to 2007. Such a short run implies necessarily a low output. The present watch is offered with an additional case back, setting pin and its original certificate. Preserved in pristine condition, it is an unmissable occasion to own one of the most legendary modern Patek philippe timepieces.
