Catalogue Essay

Launched in 2019, the Patek Philippe Alarm Travel Time introduced a novel concept for the manufacture, drawing on the design codes and aesthetics of the beloved reference 5524G. Inspired by early 20th-century aviation pioneers and the brand’s historic pilot watches, the Calatrava Pilot Travel Time initially received a lukewarm reception—much like many models that have since become icons. Today, however, it stands as a design classic and a cornerstone of Patek Philippe’s catalog. Its more sophisticated sibling, the reference 5520P, was unveiled as part of Patek Philippe’s Grand Complications collection, making it exclusively available to the brand’s most distinguished and high-profile clients.

Building on the foundation of the original Travel Time model, the reference 5520P introduced a 24-hour alarm function, complete with a hammer that strikes a classic gong and a digital display for the alarm time. At its heart lies the newly developed caliber AL 30-660 S C FUS, a movement boasting four patents and showcasing Patek Philippe’s mastery of horological innovation. The watch features four individual crowns, each serving a specific function, underscoring its technical complexity and the brand’s prowess in developing groundbreaking complications.

The reference 5520P’s black dial, adorned with luminous markers, pays homage to the vintage pilot watches of the mid-20th century, while its case is crafted from platinum—a noble metal befitting the watch’s sophisticated nature. This combination of vintage-inspired design and cutting-edge technology makes the 5520P a true standout in Patek Philippe’s lineup.

Exceedingly rare and closely guarded, only a handful have appeared in the auction market. The present example is preserved in excellent condition, with crisp hallmarks beneath the lugs. It is accompanied by its full set of accessories including the Certificate of Origin, portfolio, presentation box, and outer packaging. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a timepiece that not only exemplifies Patek Philippe’s technical and artistic excellence but also represents a significant milestone in the brand’s history.

Patek Philippe

Swiss | 1839

Since its founding in 1839, this famous Geneva-based firm has been surprising its clientele with superbly crafted timepieces fitted with watchmaking's most prestigious complications. Traditional and conservative designs are found across Patek Philippe's watches made throughout their history — the utmost in understated elegance.

Well-known for the Graves Supercomplication — a highly complicated pocket watch that was the world’s most complicated watch for 50 years — this family-owned brand has earned a reputation of excellence around the world. Patek's complicated vintage watches hold the highest number of world records for results achieved at auction compared with any other brand. For collectors, key models include the reference 1518, the world's first serially produced perpetual calendar chronograph, and its successor, the reference 2499. Other famous models include perpetual calendars such as the ref. 1526, ref. 3448 and 3450, chronographs such as the reference 130, 530 and 1463, as well as reference 1436 and 1563 split seconds chronographs. Patek is also well-known for their classically styled, time-only "Calatrava" dress watches, and the "Nautilus," an iconic luxury sports watch first introduced in 1976 as the reference 3700 that is still in production today.
