“I want it to be a happy visual language that everyone around the world can enjoy and feel involved in.”—— Mr Doodle

Mr Doodle, also known as the Doodle Man, has taken the art world by storm this past year, his work appearing at auction for the first time in April 2020 and selling for a record US$ 1.02 million in August the same year. The 27-year-old British artist is known for his doodles of cartoon-like characters, the uninterrupted lines of which he has referred to as ‘graffiti spaghetti’. The artist, whose real name is Sam Cox, conceived his doodling alter ego while studying illustration at the University of West England in Bristol, and has since become known for his large-scale mural projects and high profile collaborations with fashion and commercial brands including Fendi and Samsung.

Schoolyard Scrap (2018) is a dynamic example of the artist’s doodles in acrylic on canvas, adopting his signature monochrome palette. At the centre of the work we see two dueling figures, eyes bulging, teeth grimacing and fists swinging hazardously through the air. Around them, Mr Doodle illustrates his cast of enigmatic characters and squiggles in a thick white outline contrasting the jet black background. Perhaps one of his more energetic and emotive works, Schoolyard Scrap is an exceptional work from the artist’s oeuvre, the vitality and movement of which fizzles off the canvas.

“I want my work to consume as much of the planet as it can.”—— Mr Doodle

Mr Doodle first attracted the attention of an international audience with a video of him doodling over the entire interior of an empty shop near London’s Old Street Underground station, becoming a social media phenomenon with 2.7 million followers on Instagram and 84,400 subscribers on YouTube. Significantly, Mr Doodle has been represented by Pearl Lam Galleries since April 2021, a significant feat for the artist and symbolic of his success in the Asian market. In Spring 2021, Phillips Hong Kong sold Mr Doodle’s Guernidoodle (2019) for HK$1,890,000, far surpassing its pre-auction estimates and testament to the ability of the artist to construct a universally appealing visual language。
