Inspired by the animated musical number “Be Our Guest” in Beauty and the Beast (1991), At Least Buy Me Dinner First depicts a faceless hooded figure surrounded by golden candelabras. The seated figure prepares to enjoy a meal as a pair of macaws delicately tie a bib around their neck. Interrogating notions of consent, gender and the currency of perceived desire and desirability within transactional relationships, Marla Bendini questions: “Who gets a seat at the table and how do they earn it?”

A trans woman and cross-disciplinary artist working in painting, text, sound and performance, Bendini creates art to articulate the infinitely faceted transgender experience. She uses her painting practice to explore the female gaze and create layered “documentations” of a woman’s experience. In 2021, she presented her eighth solo exhibition at the Cuturi Gallery, Singapore.
