Across a prolific career spanning nearly five decades, Filippino artist Mario de Rivera has constructed artworks with rich visual imagery, blending Filippino and Western visual motifs. Effectively blending a plethora of cultural references, his artworks often juxtapose figures from Philippine ethnic tribes with iconic Renaissance images, such as Boticelli’s Venus. De Rivera creates these multimedia artworks by working with photo transfers, gold, lead and modelling paste, building up complex layers to create dynamic, overlapping picture planes. Central to his works is the concept of memory, explored through these fragmented surfaces that echo the ever-changing, unsteady nature of recollection.

Since his first solo exhibition in Manila in 1974, Di Rivera has maintained a distinctive profile in the country’s art scene. A passionate artistic engagement is often evident in his artworks, which often provide a hint into the Filipino psyche.
