The present unique cabinet, part of Marc Newson's commission for the interior of the Syn recording studio in Tokyo, represents a fusion of innovative design and functionality within the context of one of Japan's pioneering music production and recording companies. Syn, established as one of the first international music production firms in Japan, sought to revolutionise the recording studio experience by combining cutting-edge technical requirements with visually stunning design elements. Collaborating with a UK-based acoustic engineer, Newson ensured that the studio met precise technical specifications for optimal recording quality. His design philosophy for Syn incorporated a restrained palette of black, white, and metallic silver, punctuated by the vibrant 'Lamborghini Miura green', a nod to his fascination with the iconic automotive brand. This striking colour choice, along with lime green, Syn's signature colour, infused the studio's interior with energy and personality. Custom furniture, including the present unique cabinet, played a crucial role in enhancing the studio's aesthetic appeal and functionality. Newson's meticulous attention to detail extended to every aspect of the space, from the floors and walls to lighting fixtures and engineering units, ensuring a cohesive and immersive environment. By embracing a holistic approach to design, Newson transformed Syn into more than just a recording studio. It became a dynamic space that not only catered to the technical needs of musicians but also served as a versatile venue for fashion shoots and events. This multifaceted appeal, coupled with Newson's innovative design sensibilities, elevated Syn to a destination admired for its creativity and ability to transcend traditional notions of a recording studio.
