Meditating on the hidden life and power found within trees, Madhvi Subrahmanian was deeply inspired by Peter Wohlleben’s book, The Hidden Life of Trees, in which he writes, “A magical world… trees with human faces, trees that can talk, and sometimes walk.” This large ceramic trunk is made using a special black clay found in Shigaraki, Japan. The gnarly knots in the tree’s bark are transformed into eyes, which suggest that the tree gazes at others just as it is being observed.

Subrahmanian pushes the boundaries of the medium of clay in her artistic practice. Her installations and sculptures are within private and public collections in Singapore, India, Taiwan, Thailand and the US, and she has been invited to numerous festivals including the Jakarta Biennale, the Central China Biennale and the Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale. Subrahmanian has several impressive upcoming projects, such as a public artwork commissioned for an MRT station in Singapore.
