Kawita Vatanajyankur’s (b. 1987, Thailand) performative video works are primarily inspired by art and design of the 1990s. The influence of the provocative Young British Artists (YBAs); Maurizio Cattelan’s cheeky conceptual photography; and Takashi Murakami’s “Superflat” theory among others is evident in her bold practice.
Since graduating from RMIT University with a Bachelors in Fine Art in 2011, Kawita has achieved significant recognition. In 2015, she was a Finalist in the Jaguar Asia Pacific Tech Art Prize and participated in the prestigious Thailand Eye exhibition at Saatchi Gallery, London. In 2017, her work was shown in the Islands in the Stream exhibition in Venice, Italy alongside the 57th Venice Biennale; Asia Triennale of Performing Arts at the Melbourne Arts Centre; as well as the Asian Art Biennial Taiwan. In 2018, she participated in the Bangkok Art Biennale. Kawita held her largest museum show to date at the Albright Knox Art Gallery, New York in 2019.
Kawita’s work is in numerous museum collections, including the National Collection of Thailand, Singapore Art Museum, Dunedin Public Art Gallery (Dunedin Art Museum), MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum, as well as university collections and private collections in Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Europe and America. She is currently represented by Nova Contemporary, Bangkok and Antidote Organisation, Australia.
