In this artwork, Jan Balquin depicts a plastic scale model coconut tree ordered from China. Portrayed in oil paint on canvas, the artist transforms the coconut tree from a plastic toy into still life subject matter. Here, Balquin examines our current consumerist culture and sheds light on the shift from the natural to the manufactured that has come to characterise contemporary society.

Balquin is a contemporary visual artist who works across painting, sculpture and collage. Her artworks explore conventional notions of materiality and subject matter, often aiming to reconfigure more established forms of art. Since graduating with a Fine Arts major in Studio Art from the University of the Philippines Diliman, she has presented ten solo exhibitions at innovative galleries such as MO_Space in Manila and the West Gallery in Quezon City.
