  • Catalogue Essay

    - In honour of the firm’s most iconic dive watch from 1959, Jaeger-LeCoultre paid the ultimate tribute to the original Deep Sea model with two reissues in 2011. The Memovox tribute to Deep Sea is produced as two limited series where 959 pieces are marketed towards Europe and echoes the ethos of the "Jaeger-LeCoultre Classique 1959"; and 359 pieces were inspired by the "LeCoultre Spécial Amérique 1959", made for the American market. The reproduction adheres faithfully to its predecessor, except for one aspect, of which the stainless steel case has been slightly modified from the smaller 39.8mm to the current 40.5mm. The caseback also bears the signature motif found on the 1959 watch, featuring a frogman surrounded by bubbles.

    - While the European model, as per the present timepiece, features a matte black dial with luminescent hour markers, its American counterpart is distinguished by a two-tone black dial surrounded by a grey chapter ring, comprising a scale with five-minute graduations and simply signed "LeCoultre". The two versions offer the same range of functions including hours, minutes, center seconds and an alarm. The crown at 2 o’clock is used to wind and set the alarm, while other at 4 o’clock serves to wind the movement and set the time. Both models are powered by a self-winding Memovox Calibre 956.

    - The present example is numbered 608 of the 959-piece limited edition made for the European Market. Staying true to its original, the dial is protected by a Plexiglass crystal which is very similar to that which equipped the historical models. Furthermore, the luminous material on the dial and bezel is honed in a delicious golden hue to achieve that ideal vintage aesthetic. This diver’s watch reinterprets interesting technical solutions employed in the 1960 model, such as the screw-down-ring back sealing system with a back featuring an internal protrusion at the center, shielding it from deformity under high pressures.

-Offered in excellent condition with its original accessories, the present Memovox Tribute to the Deep Sea is a truly underrated diver’s wristwatch that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of its original.

  • Artist Biography

    Jaeger-LeCoultre

    Swiss • 1833

Not all companies in the watchmaking field have been able to stand the test of time quite like Jaeger LeCoultre, also known as the "watchmaker's watchmaker." Founded in 1833 by Antoine LeCoultre and originally named LeCoutre, the firm provided watchmaking's top brands, such as Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin and Audemars Piguet, the high-grade, unfinished mechanical movements with which they completed their watches.

In the early 1900s, Cartier's watch supplier Edmond Jaeger sought out LeCoultre's help in creating the world's thinnest watches. The collaboration resulted in the creation of Cartier's earliest Tank and Santos watches, all housed with LeCoultre movements. The duo decided to merge in 1937, and the firm officially became the Jaeger-LeCoultre brand by which collectors know and adore it today. Some of the firm's most significant and important timepieces include the Reverso, the Memovox, the Atmos clock and, among modern watches, their Master Complications.
