  • Catalogue Essay

Launched in 1948, the IWC Pilot’s Watch Mark 11 enjoyed instant traction thanks to its clean aesthetics and functional design. Fitted with a reliable cal. 89 and protected by an anti-magnetic soft iron inner shield, the Mark 11 was a solid, dependable timepiece that dominated the aviation industry up until the 1980s. Striving for innovation, this was when IWC developed the Fliegerchronograph ref. 3705, a cult favourite pilot’s utility housed in an iconic 39mm black ceramic case. Being one of the first ceramic chronographs to be manufactured in this size, it was only produced for a few years, making it a rare specimen that is still highly desired today.

The Pilot’s Watch Mark 18 “HODINKEE” is an exciting limited edition of 500 pieces that takes after the best of these two classic IWC tool watches. Resulted in the collaboration between two powerhouses in 2019, the dial pays homage to its IWC predecessors, exhibiting clean lines, painted white Arabic numerals, lumed rod-shaped indexes and most importantly, the iconic arrow at 12 o’clock. While it shares distinctive characteristics with the original watches, the 39mm case is however made entirely of Ceratanium®. Black, but not completely dark, this unique material was developed by IWC and is known to be light like titanium with the resilience of ceramic. The process of making Ceratanium® was refined over 5 years of experimentation. It begins with the calefaction of a rare titanium alloy containing zirconium oxide that eventually hardens into a ceramic crust, which then latches onto the case, giving it its matte black appearance.

The time-only Mark XVIII Edition “HODINKEE” is powered by the self-winding cal. 35100, featuring a solid caseback engraved with its limited edition number, “360”. Complemented by a sturdy embossed calfskin strap in olive green, the present pilot’s watch is a quiet yet confident piece with a dash of military discipline.

Appearing at Phillips for the first time, the present timepiece is offered in “like-new” condition with its original accessories. A rare bird indeed, this is the ultimate pilot’s watch which took nearly two years to make, combining the best of IWC’s vintage aesthetics and contemporary innovation.
