In 2006, Iwan Effendi founded the Papermoon Puppet Theatre with his wife Ria Tri Sulistyani. Equate forms part of a visual exploration by the artist into the evolving facial expressions of his puppets. Over the years, Effendi’s puppets have developed a distinct and nuanced facial expression which the artist terms “daydream face.” In Equate he captures this neutral expression that contains a multitude of different emotions on paper with charcoal and soft pastel. Like his puppets, Equate is an emotionally intricate artwork, which permits an incredible range of emotional interpretation.

Effendi graduated in 2004 from the Indonesia Institute of the Arts in Yogyakarta, where he runs the Papermoon Puppet Theatre. He has presented solo exhibitions in Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia, and has participated in group exhibitions in Bulgaria, Singapore, Australia, the Netherlands, the Philippines, France, Japan, the US and Mexico.
