Natural High explores the significance of elevation, both literal and figurative, in the Philippines. Topographically characterised by vast mountainous forms enshrouded by jungle, the Philippines is a country in which families have often inhabited homes raised high off the ground. A tradition passed down from ancestors, elevated living was seen as a tactical move to gain a vantage point as well as to place the family unit closer to the Gods and allow for closer communication with the heavens. Indy Paredes evokes these architectural structures in pop versions of red, blue and yellow, the colours of the Filipino flag, which reflect the recent cultural shift from the organic to the synthetic that occurred in the Philippines due to colonialisation and modernisation.

Born in 1988, Paredes’ art practice examines Filipino urban culture, especially the dyamics of living in congested residential spaces in the metropolis. One of the Philippines’ foremost contemporary artists, he has participated in many exhibitions in galleries within the Philippines and abroad. In 2021, he co-founded Gravity Art Space in Quezon City, which gives a platform to emerging Filipino artists.
